May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month

May is skin cancer awareness month! Donate your vehicle to support the Melanoma Research Foundation.

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, two people die every hour as a result to skin cancer. Skin cancer is the most common types of cancer, affecting nearly 5 million Americans each year.

However, thanks to years of research and treatment, 90% of these skin cancers are avoidable.

Skin Cancer Awareness Month- What To Do

Skin Cancer Awareness Month takes place each May and raises awareness about the dangers of unprotected sun exposure. The goal of this nationally recognized project is to educate and encourage people to check for warning signs and visit professionals.

Melanoma affects everyone. Melanoma does not discriminate by age, race or gender. Today, nearly 1 million people live with melanoma in the U.S. Approximately 500 children in the U.S. are diagnosed with melanoma each year. The lifetime risk of getting melanoma is about 1 in 40 for Caucasians, 1 in 200 for Hispanics and 1 in 1,000 for African Americans.

Everyone has a role in spreading awareness and advocating for research and education. You reading this article is the first step, and we appreciate you being here.

Spread the Wordteam

Educating on another is so important. Since skin cancer is visible, it is critical to know how to identify it by yourself. Detecting these warning signs during the first stages will be life saving to you and others. The Big See educates the public on how to identify new, changing, or unusual markings and seek professional help.

The Melanoma Research Foundation found the Education Institute in 2018 following a robust, independent needs assessment aimed at identifying gaps in melanoma education. Their findings made it clear that more resources were needed for raising awareness, melanoma prevention, patient education surrounding treatment and clinical trials, and engaging dedicated melanoma advocates.

The Education Institute is made up of core MRF programs and expanded education and advocacy opportunities: patient and caregiver meetings, webinars, and courses.

Support Medical Research

There are numerous ways to support medical research. Institutions often accept montly donations, volunteers, and vehicle donations. Visit a foundation's website to see how you can specifically support their mission.

Donating to #CureMelanoma

When you donate your vehicle to the Melanoma Research Foundation, you are supporting their research and public education programs.

Established in 1998, the MRF research grants are for investigator-initiated research conducted under the purview of our Scientific Advisory Committee. MRF-supported research is open to medical students through senior investigative teams and encompass not only cutaneous melanoma, but also the rare melanoma types such as uveal, mucosal and pediatric melanoma.

Responding to needs in the field, the MRF has spearheaded several scientific initiatives to accelerate research and treatments focused on the most common malignant tumor of the eye and initiatives that focus on rare melanoma subsets such as pediatric and mucosal, and the conduct of various scientific meetings.

The Melanoma Research Foundation

The Melanoma Research Foundation (MRF) is the largest independent organization devoted to melanoma. Committed to the support of medical research in finding effective treatments and eventually a cure for melanoma, the MRF also educates patients and physicians about prevention, diagnosis and the treatment of melanoma. The MRF is an active advocate for the melanoma community, helping to raise awareness of this disease and the need for a cure. The MRF’s website is the premier source for melanoma information seekers.

The MRF’s mission is to eradicate melanoma by accelerating medical RESEARCH while EDUCATING to and ADVOCATING for the melanoma community.
